Chat Room Version 3
This chat room arose out of the special needs of
http://www.yesterdayusa.com. YUSA plays old time radio shows, so a large portion
of their listeners are partly or totaly visualy impaired. This chat room uses multiple
output formats. one is highly compatible with screen readers and one uses large white
on black print for people with partial sight. The chat room also needed to be functional
on computers that have no Java support and not require downloads. It also needed to
reside on the YUSA server in the Members Only area. These requirements being met,
we began working on the "bells and whistles" of making a chat room fun and user
friendly.
All user settings are remembered from session to session so the user does not
need to set up options each time they enter the room. When a user first enters
the room, they are prompted to register a chat name. No two users can have the same
chat name. Once a user has entered the chat room, they can click on a button that
opens the OPTIONS page in a new browser window. Here they can change their chat name,
set the font and color of their messages in the room, choose live camera options,
and set there status to 'chatting now', 'away', or 'will return in x minutes'.
These status messages appear by the users chat name in the users on list. The 'will
return' status counts down the minutes.
This Chat Room support two live cameras at the same time side by side. On YUSA
they show 2 DJ's at 2 different locations at refresh rates of up to 2 seconds.
In OPTIONS, the user can choose the refresh rate of the cams. This is useful for
users on slow dialup connections. They can set refresh rates as low as 30 seconds.
We have also included admin functions in this version. Users set as admin
have the power to view and change any of the settings of any of the users.
Admin also has the power to make a user a spectator where the user can view messages
in the chat room but cannot send any messages, or ban a user where the user cannot
enter the chat room. A user can be made spectator or banned even if the user is
not in the room at the time.
Demos of this chat room can be arranged. This chat room is designed to work within
a .htaccess protected area of your site. Our manual password manager can be included.
